What is sedation dentistry?

We understand that dental appointments can be a source of stress and anxiety. At SmileOn dental clinic, we are committed to making each appointment a calm, stress-free experience, and will do everything to ease your concerns. Our dental providers are kind, compassionate, and have years of experience providing specialized treatment for patients with anxiety.

Oral sedation

Oral sedation is an ideal option for those with moderate to severe anxiety about dental treatment. Most commonly, oral sedation (anti-anxiety medication) is prescribed for relieving anxiety in the hours immediately before a dental appointment. This medication is taken in the office under supervision 1 hour before your scheduled appointment and allows you to comfortably undergo everything from a simple cleaning to extensive treatment.

Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is another option your dentist may offer to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent mixed with oxygen that will help you to relax. You’ll breathe nitrous oxide in through a small mask that covers your nose, and it takes just a few minutes for you to notice the effects. People most often describe the feeling as being relaxed, unconcerned, happy, slightly numb, and disconnected from what’s happening around them. As with oral sedation, you may feel sleepy under the effects of the sedation, but will still be able to respond to verbal commands. We can adjust the dosage of the nitrous oxide gas to fit your needs. There are no long-lasting effects associated with nitrous oxide, and you can safely drive after a dental appointment.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Mild sedation

This kind of sedative can be used orally or via inhalation. Nitrous oxide, sometimes known as “laughing gas,” is a frequent type of mild sedation. Mild sedatives like nitrous gas keep patients awake during the treatment, allowing them to breathe normally and feel fully comfortable.

Moderate sedation

Patients with more mild types of dental anxiety may benefit from oral medicine and intravenous sedation (IV sedation). Patients may be given oral medication to take before their session. In order to ease anxiety faster, dentists may inject sedatives straight into the bloodstream through a vein in the office. IV sedation keeps you awake and allows the dentist to manage everything in the duration of sedation.

Deep sedation

Deep sedation is another type of sedation. General anesthesia is one of the common types of deep sedation. Patients undergoing invasive or difficult dental treatments such as root canals or dental implants may be given general anesthesia. Patients remain unconscious and require assistance with breathing during the operation.
